Quiz- Prefixes Thursday October 7, 2015



Students will be required to provide/match/ write the meaning of the prefix and then provide examples of words that contain the given prefixes. Students might also be required to form sentences or define words based on the prefixes provided.

Students will be assessed on their ability to provide many examples of words and an understanding of the prefixes listed below. 

The Vocabulary and Homophone Quizzes have been marked and are coming home in today's take home folder to be signed by parents and returned.

We are working on Habit 1 of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids, following Stephen Covey's "The Leader in Me" program.

We have had some important discussions around our responsibilities at school, home, to ourselves and to the environment. 

In Math, we have been working on building number patterns, determining and creating the pattern rules.

Our current science unit is Light and Shadows. Students will be building Kaleidoscopes and experimenting with making shadows in the near future. Please have them bring in a flashlight and batteries and an empty paper towel roll. If you have any sequins, small shiny objects, colourful beads or objects of interest that we could add to our kaleidoscopes, please send those too!

In Language Arts, we have been spending time building our stamina for reading and writing by ourselves. We have also started a novel study together with the Newberry winning book " The Whipping Boy" By Sid Fleischman. We are focusing on different strategies for  reading comprehension such as making mental pictures, check for understanding and replacing new vocabulary words with other words that would make sense in their place.

Vocabulary Quiz Next Week Thursday



We have been learning many new vocabulary words in our Novel Study, "The Whipping Boy." Throughout this novel study, we will have several quizzes to ensure we are retaining the new words we are learning. The strategies we have learned so far for vocabulary have been to:

1. Listen for interesting words while reading.
2. Ask someone to define the word.
3. Trade a word that makes sense in its place.
4. Keep a log of new words and definitions.

Here are the words we have learned so far, some of which will appear on the quiz next Thursday September 24.

*Students are only required to know what the words mean and be able to chose correct definitions, complete sentences etc. Spelling is not being assessed on this quiz.

Science supplies needed!

Our light and shadows unit has quite a few projects that will be using items that can be found around the house. Your help in collecting these over the next few weeks will be much appreciated!

On Thursday, students will need pictures from their cameras or magazines, printouts from the computer, supplies, items etc...to demonstrate their understanding of transparent, translucent and opaque on a poster type display.

We are also collecting empty paper towel rolls, shiny, metallic, colourful, transparent, beads, sequins and reflective objects to make kaleidoscopes with. 

Students are also asked to bring a small flashlight they can use to explore shadow  making.

And within the next few weeks, students are asked to bring a shoebox or small box that they can use to make a pinhole camera with. If you have extra, those are welcome too😬

Hello Joe Clark Students and Families,

Welcome back! I am looking forward to starting an exciting year of learning with you!

Our school is attempting to go agenda free by next year. I have taken the plunge and this is the first attempt at going agenda free and putting together a classroom blog. It is my hope that this page will become a hub for classroom calendars, reminders, events and activities, homework, links and will give us a chance to showcase our learning. Though there will be writing, work samples and photos, in teaching kids about internet safety, your children's names will never be posted in conjunction with their picture and their last names will not appear on this blog. Ever.
There is a bit of a learning curve and I have not figured out all the kinks just yet. Your patience through this process is very much appreciated.

Please note that field trip information cannot be posted online for the safety of our students.

Students will also have a calendar in their take home folders that they can add to as necessary.
In addition to calendars, take home folders will contain field trip forms, newsletters, corrected work etc...

I will also be trying out a phone app called "Remind 101". This is an app that upon signing up,  will send important reminders directly to parent and student (optional) phones, devices or email.
